But if you got an invite, what's stopping a professional torrent troll from getting one too? Some people seem to think that means using "private" trackers is safe. That means if you're sharing a torrent only with people you know and trust, you won't get caught - barring an active investigation and warrant. But the German ISPs, government, and police don't monitor private internet traffic for copyright infringment without probable cause for suspicion and a court-ordered search or wiretap warrant. Those people are then entitled to get your name and address from your ISP, without a court order, and to send the letters demanding roughly 800 euros - and they are legally able to collect. That means media industry lawyers, ambulance chasers, and all manner extortionists, if they can get the torrent or magnet link, or you have DHT enabled. When you use bittorrent, your IP number is visible to anyone else on the same torrent. The penalties may be less, and rarely enforced, but it's still illegal. Unauthorized downloading of copyrighted material is not "questionable from a legal point of view".
